Arts School of Sichuan Normal University

At the invitation of Professor Xiang Silou of the Arts School of Sichuan Normal University, Mr Colin Park spent a month in 2008 from September 11 to October 9 in Chengdu and took part in the arts activities that follow:

1. Under the guidance of Professor Xiang Silou, Mr Park studied traditional Chinese woodblock art. Over a period of twenty days, from making the preliminary sketch, cutting the woodblock, to printing by hand, he completed a realistic portrait, 45 by 60 cm in size. This work presented considerable difficulty, and the results were very presentable.

2. He gave a lecture to the students in the Arts School, 'Young People's Art of the Future', at which he showed oil paintings, sculpture and sketches that he had made. A number of students raised points of interest to them for discussion with Colin. This was an excellent occasion, well received by staff and students alike.

3. Colin presented the Arts School with the woodcut picture 'Dance' that he had made in Britain, and Professor Lin Mu, Director of the Arts School, gave Colin a Certificate of Collection. Colin then presented a disk of his paintings to the Arts School.

4. Together with Professor Xiang Silou, Colin travelled to the celebrated Emei Mountain and Leshan Buddha, and experienced Chinese folk art at first hand.

5. He visited Chengdu's Song Xian Qiao Arts City (the picture gallery) and the cultural antiques market. He went sightseeing in Chengdu and saw the famous Hetang Yuese - the Moonlit Lotus Pond - outside the city.

6. Colin visited some well-known artists in Chengdu at their places of work, and was photographed together with them.

7. Colin saw the exhibition in Chengdu Art Gallery - the art gallery of the Arts School of Sichuan Normal University - of work by teachers, graduating students and students on higher degree courses. During his one month in Chengdu, Mr Colin Park both studied China's traditional art and introduced western contemporary art to Chinese students. For a man of sixty to work hard day after day and to make a significant contribution to artistic exchange between China and the west was an achievement for which we wish to express our appreciation.
